Cauliflower line: CMS 8441-5 (early group, dwarf plant type)
Background:
Lack of uniformity in curd appearance alongwith maturity and low productivity are major limiting
factor in early cauliflower. The hybrids showed better results in cauliflower for solving these
problems. However, in self-incompatible lines the level of self-incompatibility (SI) always remains
doubtful, hence, the Ogura sterile cytoplasm based CMS system is most reliable and affordable
at present for hybrid breeding and production of hybrid seeds in cauliflower but it was not
introgressed into early group genotypes of Indian cauliflower.
Technology Details:
The DC 8441-5 is an Ogura sterile cytoplasm based cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) line of early
maturity group (25-30 °C) of Indian cauliflower. Its maturity period is middle of October. The
flowers of the CMS line are medium in size, light yellow, have normal ovary and well developed
nectaries. It is good combiner for earliness and curd yield and good seed yield make it suitable
for use in hybrid breeding. . The new CMS line CMS 8441-5 is a step to solving the problems
related to SI system and facilitate affordable hybrid seed production in cauliflower.
